Shade Brush and Palette ranges

One native Palette range powers direct shading and other generators.

Select an exact range from Blockbench's native Palette and paint darker or lighter without inventing colors.

6 min read

Drag across contiguous swatches, then paint exact steps through that range.

01

Select the range

  1. 1

    Choose Shade Brush

Open the normal Paint brush dropdown and select Shade Brush.

Paint mode > Brush dropdown > Shade Brush

  2. 2

    Drag across the Palette

Press one swatch and drag across a contiguous set of native Palette colors.

  3. 3

    Check the outline

The selected swatches receive one continuous outline, and the Paint toolbar shows a compact copy.

02

Paint darker or lighter

  • Left paint moves an exact matching pixel to the preceding swatch.
  • Right paint moves it to the following swatch when right-click model painting is enabled.
  • The first and last colors clamp instead of wrapping.
  • Colors outside the selected range stay untouched.
  • Source alpha is preserved.
  • A pixel advances at most once during one stroke.

03

The range is shared

Block Light & Shade and new Form Gradient recipes copy the current Shade Brush selection when their dialog opens. Reordering a generator's copy does not change the brush range itself.
